For the last two years, Marco Ornelas participated in Best Best & Krieger LLP’s Summer Associate program. The recent University of California, Hastings College of Law graduate was the firm’s First Year Law Student Diversity Fellowship/Scholarship Program recipient in 2019 and was invited to return with a group of incoming third-year law students in 2020.

As he writes in his essay for the Bloomberg Law “Acing It as a Summer Associate” series, that first year was “epic” with visits to breweries, horse races and baseball games. Of course, with the COVID-19 pandemic changing the program to a virtual one in 2020, he had a different — yet still valuable — experience.

“My 2020 law firm experience was not traditional. We had an entirely virtual program, but I was able to meet more attorneys during this second time as a summer associate because of Zoom,” Marco wrote in his essay published June 3. “The daily lunches I knew from my first summer were replaced by food delivery and online video conversations.”

The program culminated with a job offer in the Municipal Law practice group, which Marco accepted and will begin after he takes the bar exam

“The law firm made a lot of effort to make our summer memorable,” he wrote of BB&K. “For me, the decision to accept my job offer was an easy one because even with the remote experience, I felt connected to the firm — like I was at the right place at the right time.”
