California Public Records Act Reforms Should Consider Agency Workload, Too
On March 13, 2023, Best Best & Krieger Partner and Director of PRA Services and E-Discovery Counsel Christine Wood published a “Reader Reaction” in CalMatters. In the article, which was a direct response to the article “Could Public Records Act Be Made More Useful?,” Wood looked at what agencies face when considering the California Public Records Act.
The article covered how California lawmakers are considering a bill that would reform how disclosure disputes under the Public Records Act are settled. Attorneys who work with public agencies say reforms should consider how the law can sometimes be misused.
“Recent efforts by the Legislature to increase transparency have focused mostly on law enforcement records, but there never seems to be any interest in providing agencies a modicum of relief,” she wrote. “As someone who treasures the fourth estate and its role in our democracy, I believe we can do both.”
